Welcome to Niagara: Everything You Need to Know About Setting Up Utilities Before You Move
Whether you're drawn by the region's world-class wineries, the natural beauty of the escarpment and shoreline, the affordability compared to the GTA, or the tight-knit communities that make this area truly special — moving to the Niagara Region is an exciting decision. But before you can fully settle in and enjoy everything this remarkable part of Ontario has to offer, there's some practical groundwork to cover: getting your utilities and essential services set up.
This guide is designed to take the guesswork out of the process. We've broken everything down by utility type and by municipality so you can quickly find exactly what applies to your new home. Our general recommendation: contact all providers at least 2–4 weeks before your move-in date to avoid any gaps in service.
1. Hydro (Electricity)
Electricity service in the Niagara Region is divided among three main providers, depending on where you're moving:
- St. Catharines Hydro — serves residents within the City of St. Catharines
- Niagara Peninsula Energy (NPE) — serves the majority of urban and suburban municipalities across the region
- Hydro One — serves rural areas, including Wainfleet, West Lincoln, and parts of Pelham and Lincoln
To set up electricity service, contact your local provider as soon as your closing date is confirmed. You'll typically need to provide your new address, move-in date, and personal identification. Most providers allow you to set up accounts online or by phone.
2. Natural Gas
Enbridge Gas is the natural gas provider for the entire Niagara Region, making this one of the simpler utilities to sort out regardless of which municipality you're moving to. If you're transferring an existing Enbridge account, the process is straightforward — simply call or log in online to update your service address. New customers can set up an account through the Enbridge Gas website or by calling their customer service line. Again, aim to do this 2–4 weeks before your move.
3. Water & Wastewater
The Niagara Region handles bulk water treatment and distribution at a regional level, but billing and local water service is managed by each individual municipality. This means you'll need to contact your specific local municipal office to set up your water and wastewater account when you move in. New homeowners should make this call early — some municipalities require an in-person visit or inspection before service is activated.
4. Internet & Cable
Internet options in Niagara vary significantly depending on whether you're moving to an urban centre or a more rural community:
- Bell — offers DSL and Fibe internet across much of the region; availability of Fibe speeds depends on infrastructure in your area
- Cogeco — cable internet with strong coverage in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Welland, and other urban municipalities
- Rogers — available in select areas across the region
- TekSavvy — a popular reseller that uses Bell and Cogeco infrastructure, often at competitive rates
- Xplornet — satellite and fixed wireless internet, an important option for rural municipalities such as Wainfleet, West Lincoln, and parts of Lincoln and Pelham where cable or fibre options may be limited or unavailable
If you're moving to a rural property, it's especially important to research internet availability at your specific address before closing. Rural internet speeds and options can vary significantly even street by street.
5. Waste Collection & Recycling
The Niagara Region manages waste collection and recycling programs across all 12 municipalities. Programs include blue box recycling, the green bin organics program, and regular garbage collection. Collection schedules vary by municipality and even by street, so be sure to visit the Niagara Region's website to look up your specific collection day and download the waste calendar for your area. The Region also offers a free app to help you track collection days and sort items correctly.
6. Phone Service
Bell and Rogers are the primary providers for both landline and mobile phone service in the Niagara Region. Cell coverage is generally strong in urban areas, but can be more limited in rural municipalities like Wainfleet and West Lincoln. If reliable cell service is important to you, it's worth checking coverage maps for your specific address before you commit.
